February, 2010 MEETING - in case you missed it

Art Ellis Showed some slides of TSME’s involvement at the Milton steam show, setting up the track and some of the engines with their owners from over 30 years ago. There were also pictures of the TSME picnic at Art’ place. There was some difficulty in recognizing some of the members from their younger days!

He closed by showing some of the engraving work he is involved with now and also shots of his workshop.

Fred Eagle showed a lathe tool holder that he designed for his South Bend lathe. He then showed a tool for winding springs and a turret type holder for boring bars.

Ken Strauss made a drawbar for R8 tooling for his mill that had a “self-eject” feature. He explained how he had to clean up the spindle bore before assembling the bar in place.

Wolfgang Habicher showed a cross-drilling jig that fits on a QC toolpost. He also showed a rotary table made from plans in HSM. His first try at making the worm wheel was not accurate and he explained how he solved the problem on his second try.

Joe Foster is rebuilding a Hudson locomotive. He has decided to add the streamlining feature per the Dreyfuss design. He showed the progress so far and explained how a kettle and a coffeemaker were “modified” to provide the required complex shapes using a spot welder to assemble the bits and pieces.

Don Carr has worked out a solution to “extract” broken taps from partially completed components. He made up a jig using a Dremel tool attached to the spindle of his mill. He first uses diamond burrs to create a flat spot and then a tiny carbide spade drill to remove the bulk of the tap. He also explained the technique he has found to work successfully.

Nigel Coppola brought in the compound marine engine he is scratch building. He explained how he went about drilling and tapping the cylinder covers using the bolt circle feature on his newly acquired DRO on his mill.

Bill Lowry showed a spring loaded centre and a die holder he made with a feature of being able to use both together. He also showed a bending jig that he found at a tool sale that can be set up using the included cap screws.

Gerry Reed has started work on a fixture to align the table of a drill press when it is moved up or down. He plans to lock the rack in place with clamps at the top and bottom. He hopes the same system could be used on a mill-drill.
