FRIDAY, January 8, 2010 at 7.30pm at the Canadian Air and Space Museum, Downsview
IN THIS EVENING’S PROGRAM YOU MAY EXPECT TO HEAR FROM:
Fred Eagle will talk about the boiler he is building
Charles Foster will discuss the building of patterns for full size flywheels used on engines
Brian Burns will talk about steam reversing gear on 7 ¼” scale locomotives and will discuss how they came about
Our topic this month is the “big stuff”. However, we would still like to see the models or equipment you are working on.
Many thanks for the great display of items brought in at the last meeting.

December, 2009 MEETING - in case you missed it
Charles Foster showed progress on a 1/3 scale single cylinder Domestic engine he is building using bar stock. The bore is 1 3/16” and stroke is 2”. This is his second one - the first was built using castings.
Nigel Coppola brought in the scratch-built compound marine model engine he is building. He discussed some of the problems he has encountered and how he overcame them.
Adrian Haines showed photos of the 4 ½” scale 6HP Burrell traction he built. He mentioned that he had been “exposed” to TE’s as a kid growing up on a farm. This exposure resulted in a many year, many dollar project to build one using plans and castings from Plastow. He went into detail on how he made the differential and main gears. The making of the nearly 24” diameter rear wheels was explained as were many of the other components. He used 4140 steel for the crankshaft. The completed engine weighs about 1000lbs and took about 1700 hours to build.
Robin Collard had brought in a 4”, 4 jaw chuck and backplate he had purchased. He asked the members how to go about mounting the backplate to the chuck and, from the many suggestions by members present, hopefully can proceed.
Paul Stearns showed a jig he made and talked about the method he used to balance the air flow from the registers in each room of his house. The unit was made using a balance beam principle and weights to measure relative output from the register.
Sean Wilmut brought in an example of birdhouses he made for gifts. He explained the construction and how the lack of a landing perch prevented larger birds from robbing the nest.
Eric Kingsley showed a horizontal engine he made. An interesting feature was the use of a clear plastic valve cover so one could see the motion as the engine operates.
Bert de Kat showed a 2 cylinder engine that was built by the late Vic Varga to the Westbury “Seagull” design. He mentioned that he plans to clean it up and probably upgrade the original bolts. Bert thinks that Vic built it to show that he could do more than just build clocks!
Bill Huxhold brought in a model of an old style (1894) drill press he acquired. He thinks it was a salesman’s display model but it now has many parts missing. He may use the casting as a starter for a small milling machine.
Vic Walpole brought in parts from a battery pack used in model airplanes. He explained how he soldered batteries together using cardboard washers to contain the solder. He also had the punch and die used to make the washers. He also explained how one could solder aluminum.
Robert Wyss showed some toolholders he made for a QC post. He plans to make a new post as well. He then showed an air operated vise that needed cleaning up along with some “fixing” to get it operating correctly. He found that sandblasting was appropriate due to the amount of welding debris encrusted on the unit!
Dave Bowes brought in a wind up model plane and explained the way he copies designs onto the tissue paper used to cover the wings etc. He also went into detail on how he bends balsa wood.
Phil Regan showed a ball turning attachment he made for his lathe that uses a Sherline boring head to provide the correct offset. He saw the design at a NAMES show and decided to copy it.
