November, 2009 MEETING - in case you missed it
Fred Eagle brought in the chassis of a 0-4-0, 7 ½” scale locomotive of a original 3’ 6” gauge Porter locomotive designed by Don Young. He decided to modify the design to an A3 Pennsylvania switcher designed by Kozo Hiroaka but doubled up in scale. He talked about making the making the axles, wheels and the cylinders. He also showed pictures of the boiler.
Bert de Kat brought in an electrically operated pendulum clock made by the late Lawrence Bateman, a past President of the Club, but not quite finished. It was built 39 years ago and Bert plans to complete the build, hopefully soon. He explained the design which has a “Froment” movement and the items which still need to be fixed.
Steve Lilly showed a 2 cylinder engine he is building. It is a “Silver Bullet” designed by the late Bob Shores. He still needs to do the final setting up of the timing and verifying that everything operates correctly before firing it up. He also showed a single cylinder “Nanzy”. He explained how he machined the crankshaft/timing gear pinion and the problems he faced.
Nigel Coppola gave a slide show of a model thresher (Ransome) he bought. The crankshafts for the agitating mechanism were faulty so he set about making a new pair. He showed the procedure he used to build them up after getting useful advice from Bill Huxhold. He also showed some of the lamps he built and explained how he painted them. He is now working on a marine compound engine he is building freelance and showed some pictures of it.
An Auction was held of some of the late Brian Glover’s tooling and some duplicate copies of the Club’s collection of Model Engineer magazines.
Bob Crawford showed the movie he made of activities at the last TSME Picnic held at Bob Allin’s place. It reminded us of that balmy day in September where the folks, both young and not so young, were obviously enjoying themselves. Thanks to Bob for compiling and editing this presentation.
Dave Oulton showed the grinder he is building which uses a mini electric (Proxxon) grinder and small diamond discs. He has used a small X-Y table and 3” RT from LMS. He also showed some cutter holders he made that provide the correct rake, clearance etc.
